Polish Banquet May 2013 – a Great Success!

Well over 50 of our members enjoyed a banquet that overflowed not only with a terrific selection of appetizers, entrees, side dishes and desserts, but also with fun conversations that continued late into the evening.  Barbara Rembiesa welcomed everyone with a surprise champagne toast, and Stan Trojanowski set the mood with a great selection of dancing music.  The cost of only $20, which included membership fees, made this evening the best bargain of the year and introduced us to many new members. Our thanks to the hardworking Executive Committee for this big success.

Look for announcements about our July picnic and our fall annual potluck dinner/dance.

“Members Only “Invitation to “Tea with W. Szymborska”

Wisława Szymborska is a popular Polish poet, essayist and translator who died in February of this year. In 1996, she was awarded the Noble Prize in Literature and is now read in translation in English and many European languages as well as in Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese and Chinese.

Her poems are written in a conversational style and present everyday details with touching, poignant and ironic insights into what we all experience. Here are the first lines of her title poem from her book of poetry, Here.

I don’t know about other places,
but here on Earth there’s quite a lot of everything.
Here chairs are made and sadness,
scissors, violins, tenderness, transistors,
water dams, jokes, teacups.

In honor of Wisława Szymborska, the Polish Society of Charleston is holding a reading of five of her poems on Friday, May 18, at 7:00 pm at the home of Vice President, Barbara Rembiesa on James Island. Society members are cordially invited to attend the “Tea with W. Szymborska.” Seating is limited to about 20 Society members and guests so you are asked to RSVP to Gary @ freewhiteeagle@live.com as soon as possible, and I will give you details on the location. Acceptance will be on a “first come-first served” basis.
